The Brief

The objective of this project was to create a short folktale animation for the Visual Culture Study subject, inspired by the traditional art style of Madhubani painting.

The challenge was to translate a static folk art form into motion while preserving its cultural essence, patterns, symbolism, and storytelling style. The animation followed a narrative around Tara, a mythical fish, and the theme of light bringing hope to the village.

The Design

The visual style was developed using Madhubani-inspired character design, ornamental patterns, flat illustrations, and symbolic storytelling.

Characters like Tara, Amma, the children, and the mythical fish were designed using traditional motifs and detailed line work. The animation used dark-to-light transitions, glowing diya effects, water ripples, and magical particle effects to create emotional progression from darkness to hope.

the takeaway

The final outcome was a short animated folktale that blended traditional Indian folk art with modern motion storytelling.

This project helped me understand how cultural heritage can be translated into contemporary visual narratives while maintaining authenticity, emotion, and strong artistic identity.
